Joe: Welcome to the Being Found Show. We are your guide to being found online by more buying customers. This is a radio show and what’s a radio show without the weather cast, right? I hope this weather cast is more accurate than a lot of others out there because this isn’t a normal weathercast.
There is a company you will hear us talking about now and then called Moz. Moz is a very powerful tool to help businesses or people who are in the search engine optimization business. It’s a tool that helps those get their websites and found. It has all kinds of tools like keyword research. Moz gives a weathercast of their own.
“MozCast is a weather report showing turbulence in the Google algorithm over the previous day (or see the 5-day history on the left). The hotter and stormier the weather, the more Google’s rankings changed.” Source: Moz. Currently, the weather is 90 degrees and stormy meaning that a whole lot is happening on Google right now.
Chauncey: Does that mean that there’s a lot of changes coming from Google or that there’s a lot of changes coming from the competition coming in or some combination of the two of those?
Joe: Well, I guess we’ll figure it out every time we talk about it.
Chauncey: I think it’s a combination of the two of those the people searching are a big part of search itself. The changes in the way people use things and what they want and how they find them is what demands the changes from Google and the businesses online. Some would think that if it is a tumultuous, stormy day that Google has put out some big update, but that isn’t necessarily true.
The way the algorithm works is somebody types in a search term, and they’re looking for some specific thing. If society shifts where everyone is looking for something a little bit different, we are going to see different search results coming up due to the algorithm, but not due to any changes in the algorithm itself.
Joe: Let’s talk about an example of that. We have all of these new voice assistant devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Home Mini. If you need to buy something for your home, you tell your voice assistant to order the thing you want to buy without any effort on your end. The voice assistants are changing the way people buy and search the internet. Google has to make changes to adapt to these devices, and the smarter these devices become, the more Google has to change with it. It isn’t always a Google algorithm update that is causing these changes in the MozCast; it may be new devices or updates to those devices. As well it could be something new is introduced into the ecosystem that Google needs to accommodate.
Chauncey: Google’s tracking what answers are helping people when a good number of people finds an answer that fits better, that is going to change the weather forecast.
Joe: So we have a stormy 90 degrees, and it looks like it has been that way for a while. There is a lot going on in Google and its search platform. We have only hit the tip of this iceberg. Take a look at the MozCast for yourself here.
